In July of 1588, Sir Francis Drake was involved in a game of lawn bowling when he was advised that the Spanish Armada was fast approaching. His response? “We still have time to finish the game and thrash the Spaniards, too.” He then proceeded to finish the match (which he lost) before taking on the Armada (which he won).

The veracity of this tale is still heavily debated.

What is not up for debate however is the love that local players in West Hartford have for their club and their game.

Club president Ginger Stolzenberg encourages anyone intested to stop by and check out the play on game days.

For more information see the club website or call 860-232-1040.

The Fernleigh Lawn Bowling Club is located at 35 Lancaster Rd. just behind Butterfly restaurant on Farmington Ave.
