If you are looking for some entertainment but are worried about the dreaded holiday bills, I have the perfect event picks for you. They are all free, all in Hartford, and all promise to provide a needed break from the post holiday blues. I have personally attended the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Day at the Wadsworth and it is great fun, especially for kids. You won't be disappointed, and the price is right!
Hartford Festival of Lights
Bushnell Park and Constitution Plaza, Downtown Hartford
The lights go out on January 6th !
Head to Constitution Plaza and Bushnell Park to see the lighting display and to take a spin on the ice at the public skating rink in the park before it disappears until next year. With free skating and free rentals, the whole family can enjoy the winter wonderland right in the heart of the city.

Jazz Break on a Sunday Afternoon

Starting January 2nd you can come in from the cold and enjoy the soothing sounds of jazz piano. Afternoon jazz programs will be offered every Sunday starting in January from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. in the atrium of Hartford Public Library, 500 Main Street, Hartford. This series will continue through April 2011.

Jazz in the Pocket is an opportunity for high school students—and musicians of all ages—to experience an old jazz tradition, participation in a jam session. Jazz in the Pocket allows emerging musicians to show what they have to offer and to network with local artists. Bring your instruments and let your talents be heard: teachers, parents, friends and family are welcome.

Join us for our eighth annual MLK Community Day as we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through a variety of performances, art-making activities, storytelling, tours and more. Come dream big as the Museum celebrates with stories told by Dr. Raouf Mama, winner of the 2008 National Multicultural Children’s Book Award, and the sounds of Lift Every Voice and Sing (LEVAS) Community Gospel Choir.
