In this Treading Lightly segment, Christina DeFranco takes a trip into the emerging world of eco-weddings. In 2009, Heather Burns-DeMelo and Kate Harrison hosted the state's first-ever green bridal at the Hotel Chesterfield in Stamford. Burns-DeMelo, founder of CT Green Scene, said she "saw a trend for consumers to really make a statement for their wedding."
Greening a wedding can not only reduce environmental damage, it can also save money. Harrison, author of The Green Bride, described locally sourcing the flowers at her wedding. Over 30 vendors attended the bridal show including a green caterer who used all local produce and a solar-powered DJ.
Green weddings are a counterpoint to the waste of a typical wedding. If the trend continues, the days of the $30,000 mega-wedding may be numbered.
