Lieberman, the Beginning of the End

It is, of course, fitting that Joe Lieberman announces the end of his reign on a day characterized by slipperiness. Last night, a New York radio producer asked me what Connecticut people were feeling as they absorbed the news of his departure and I said, although I had no idea, "relief." The truth is that Lieberman ceased to be a Connecticut figure about ten years ago. His preferred stage was the national one. His interest in the affairs of Connecticut since that time has been confined to fighting the sub base closing and getting elected in 2006.

Still, we feel relief. It is exhausting to have a Senator whose reputation for opportunism and duplicity is so towering. We are mocked by Jon Stewart and taunted in the blogs. What's wrong with you people? You keep electing this man.

He would not have been elected this time, and he knows it.
