AG Wants Clarity From Craigslist

The website craigslist has removed its adult services section, following concerns that it was hosting ads for prostitution. WNPR's Jeff Cohen reports.

Craigslist removed the link to the adult services section of its website and replaced it with the word “censored.”  But Attorney General Richard Blumenthal – who has been part of an ongoing effort to persuade the company to eliminate ads for prostitution from its web pages – says he is concerned that the move may not be permanent.

“There are evident indications that the ads are moving to other sections of the site, such as causal encounters. We’re asking craigslist to take effective action to stop that kind of migration.”

Blumenthal -- a Democrat running for U-S Senate -- said he is looking into possible legal options.  But he said his hope is that the company will make the necessary changes on its own.

"We're asking craigslist to put people above profits and do the right thing voluntarily, and change its business model if necessary, which it has a moral -- if not a legal -- obligation to do."

An attorney for craigslist said he was unable to comment.

For WNPR, I'm Jeff Cohen in Hartford.
