Colin McEnroe Show: 2011 Song Of The Summer
Our panelists hotly debate the song of the summer for 2011.
What makes a summer song?
Joan Holliday says two things: heat and joy. The Internet has sort of informally agreed Katy Perry's Last Friday Night is the 2011 song of the summer, but our panelists weren't so sure.
It's certianly true the song of the summer is NOT the best song released in the vicinity of one given summer. If it were otherwise, the song of the summer of 1989 would be "Here Comes Your Man" by the Pixies instead "Right Here Waiting" by Richard Marx.
In the meantime, have a listen to our show and check out the music videos for some of the nominees:
Adele, "Rolling In The Deep"
Blake Shelton, “Honey Bee”
Bruno Mars, "The Lazy Song”
Katie Perry, "Last Friday Night"
Foster the People, “Pumped Up Kicks”
Lady Gaga with Clarence Clemmons, "Edge of Glory"
LMFAO, "Party Rock Anthem"
L’il Wayne, “How to Love”
Pitbull featuring Ne Yo, "Give Me Everything"
Wiz Khalifa & Snoop Dogg, "Young Wild & Free"

How about this year's "All I Know," by Matt the Electrician. An all-time favorite is "Summertime Thing," by Chuck Prophet.
Best Summer Song 2011
I think the 2 standout songs of the 2011 summer are: Florence & The Machine "Dogs Days Are Over" and Adele "Rolling In The Deep". Both songs have an upbeat warmth that leaves the listening wanting to hit replay over and over again. Moreover, neither song is the bubble gummy, over produced dribble that often hits the airwaves during the summer months.
Get Ready - Rare Earth version
I have this vivid memory imprint of listening to this song at the swimming pool, circa 1971. They had a jukebox in the pinball pavilion and this song got played over and over....if I stumble across it on the radio, I crank the tunes and open the windows!
Did not hear the whole show today, but it would have been a great opportunity to play a little Jonathon Richman "That summer feeling's gonna haunt you the rest of your life..."

I hate to award the Song Of The Summer to Katy Perry two years in a row.
But "Last Friday Night" sure seems to be the song of this summer. It's about drinking too much and skinny dipping, which evokes summer for me. And the video features Rebecca Black, the YouTube sensation of 2011. When I look back at this summer ten years from now, "Last Friday Night"
will be the only song that truly reminds me of Summer 2011. It's dumb and borderline offensive. Really dumb. But with the debt debate, "dumb" is a good word for Summer 2011. :) P.S. I think it's inaccurate to call Rebecca Black "gawky". Rebecca Black can't sing. But she has a surprising amount of confidence and stage presence for a middle schooler, as exhibited in the Katy Perry video and her other public appearances.

Martha Reeves and the Vandellas "Dancin' in the Street"
Eric Burdon and War "Spill the Wine" (reminds me of driving the Garden State Parkway to Ocean City, Md. with my best friend's family in the summer of 1970).

NPR – my favorite radio station. Colin McEnroe – my favorite show. And for the first time ever, today I had to turn off the radio for an hour.

I can't believe that these are the songs that you adults are listening too.
