Colin McEnroe Show: Approaching 90, Jazz Legend Dave Brubeck Still Thrives

Nathan Hale's story is about many things. And one of those things is dying young. Dave Brubeck's story is about many things. One of those things is living to a ripe old age.

Both men served in the army -- Hale enlisting as a commissioned lieutenant in the American Revolution , Brubeck as a private in World War II.

Hale was hanged at the age of 21. His body was buried in an unmarked grave and has never been recovered. At the time of his death, he was largely unremarked by the greater world. His story was not discovered or embraced until years after the war.

Brubeck has led a more charmed life as one of the leading world ambassadors of jazz for 60 years, although he too almost had his life cut short in 1951 when a swimming accident nearly broke his neck and put him in traction for 21 days.
