Colin McEnroe Show: The Best Of Everything 2010
Gene Seymour and David Edelstein list off their favorite stuff of the year.

I used to be pretty good at spitting out lists of the best things in culture for any given year, but something about the frantic effort of getting ready for this daily radio show is antithetical to the kind of relaxed rate of absorption you need for that.
Patrick and I crunched up a lot of books this year, taking notes and sticking post-its on pages as we got ready for an episode. It makes it hard for the greatness of a book to stand out, although a couple I'd flag were "In Pursuit of Silence" by George Prochnik, a non-fiction account of all the ways we actually add noise to our modern life and then seek relief from it. And "The Eerie Silence, Renewing our Search of Alien Intelligence," by Paul Davies, who went far afield from his subject and wrote eloquently about how unlikely life really is and how much of life on earth we have not really catalogued.

John Hawkes is great and he DID NOT die in Deadwood. He lasted all three seasons! Thanks. Ed
