Colin McEnroe Show: 'Color Me Obsessed' ... Not Crazy
*This episode originally aired April 6, 2011*
We all know what it's like to slip into the gravitational pull of a musical artist. You might have a few weeks where you just can't stand to listen to to anything else. In fact, the musical universe seems divided up exactly that way - Your Guys. And Everybody Else.
I go through that occasionally, these days, with The Hold Steady. Their lyrics, vocals, guitars are just aimed right into my brain, and anything else seems like it's playing way off in the distance. But what if that feeling didn't go away? Ever. Ever since I was a teenager, I've known people whose admiration and affection for certain artists was damn near a way of life. Ten or 20 concerts a year if possible and engagement with a network of other fans.
In 1975, maybe the artist was Jethro Tull.
Today, whoever it is, the digital revolution makes even more room for your single-minded rock passion.

I'd probably spend all my winnings on traveling to music festivals around the world and photographing the bands :)
EMAIL FROM LOGAN:
Once again deadheads get the shaft. Talk about a community with connections. Talk about being connected to a band. I wish I was on your show to talk about the dead
EMAIL FROM JENNY:
My boyfriend and i met because of our love of the band WEEN.
We met on the online ween forum. Neither of us were looking for love. We were both in long term relationships.
We had secret crushes on each other, which was joked about often.
We would meet up at ween shows all over the east coast multiple times a year and hang out with our friends from the forum.
Eventually we were both single and we knew that we were perfect for each other. We've been together for almost 5 years, commuting back and forth every weekend between montpelier vt and ct.
He's been searching for a library job in ct for the past 4 years and he's had no luck!
If you or your fans know of any library or cataloguing jobs in ct or western ma - let me know! We need to get started on our ween fan babies asap!!!
Thanks!
EMAIL FROM DONNA:
Tried to call... Tori is a Kate Bush wannabe and isn't even *close* to a tenth as original!!!!'
Sheese!
Great show. To Gorman's point
Great show.
To Gorman's point about the record store, fanzines and the like (surprised he didn't mention the 'Stink' rubber stamp cover). The one great thing about the internet is that it cuts out all of the noise. I would have to invest a lot of time and sift through hours music I didn't like to be turned on to a band like Swervedriver or see the 'P-9' video by Soul Asylum on '120 Minutes'. I used to spend as much time hating music as enjoying it. In today's media world Lady Gaga, Britney Spears or faux country music simply dont' exist in my universe.
Ugh.
Of course she likes Kate Bush, but this has been recounted over and over and over. If you know anything other than the surface stuff of Tori, she is soooooooooo much more. Led Zep., Beatles, Queen, Chopin, etc.
Todd Family
Well done Lois! Loved the Todd earring pic! We are a Family with great musical taste!
I wish I could have
I wish I could have participated in this show! I've been obsessed with bands since about 1976 when it was Queen. Others on my list - The Clash, REM (saw 3 shows during "Monster" tour), My Chemical Romance (saw 4 shows during the incredibly long "Black Parade" tour), Green Day (2 shows in 2 years, plus 2 trips to NY for "American Idiot" on Broadway), and Alkaline Trio. The marriage of melody and thought-provoking lyrics captivates me like nothing else, and the songwriters I obsess over are magicians and/or geniuses!
FYI, I do NOT spend countless hours on youtube or google! The internet invites obsession, don't you think?
The fans of Adam Lambert are
The fans of Adam Lambert are obsessed, but don't feel like losers. We are often "older" and fight for the right to love pop/rock music.

At the risk of offending your Tori Amos fanb, I'd say she owes a big debt to Kate Bush

I'm listening to your show about fandom. Surprised noone's called in so far about the great Adam Lambert fandom.

I have arranged college courses, summer vacations and personal relationships around Sonic Youth tours and album releases.

Upson an invitation by friends, I saw dervish the very first time they came to Hartford. I was wowed by them! When they were on break, we went downstairs (to see if we could get a beer!), they complied and we became fast friends. That night, post concert, we joined them at the old Keg (now, Wood N Tap). That was about 15 years ago, and I don’t miss an opportunity to see them whenever they’re here.

Chion says to email about my music obsessions for the show today - what would you like to know? Specific bands/musicians? I am obsessed with music festivals and was just thinking this morning that it I won the lottery I'd probably spend all my winnings on traveling to music festivals around the world and photographing the bands :)
