Colin McEnroe Show: Connecticut Curiosities And Hidden Treasures

For my time and money, one of the best small attractions in the state is the Connecticut Trolley Museum is East Windsor.

One of the best hikes is the Mile of Ledges that departs from Bristol and climbs up and down until it comes to an old Tory hideout from the Revolution.

One of the great ways to spend an afternoon is Gillette Castle followed by  a ferry crossing of the river.

But all of my opinions are based in my son's childhood, when we frequently lit out on Wednesday afternoons for a small Connecticut adventure.

There is, in general, a lot to be said for being where you are. Paris would be nice, but you'd be amazed an what's waiting for you in a 10 or 20 mile radius.

I made a commitment to see a lot of this stuff, but to this day, I haven't actually journeyed up to the Waterbury ridge where Holy Land sits or gone inside the Grove Street Cemetery in New Haven.

The Leatherman

Listened to the re-run of your show tonight. Great stuff. Much new information on the planned exhumation and study of the Leatherman has been in the news lately. I believe he should be left alone, but I've collected all the recent articles, and much more at my blog:

The Old Leather Man

The Old Leather Man had three or more cave-rock/shelters in Watertown & Thomaston CT.

The Rock House Cave was one of the three in that area that has been documented by the famous LM researcher Leroy W. Foote. For over 40 years Mr. Foote interviewed over 500 people who saw him and was taken to many of the cave-rock/shelter that he used. Some shelters are on private property.

Three years ago Wayne the son of Leroy Foote gave me his father’s research.

Any cave-rock/shelter that the Old Leather Man used is a “True Leather Man Cave”

Great Site, “Keep The Legend Alive”

P.S. If any anyone has and information or question about the LM please email me at danwdeluca@aol.com

Although the Leather Man most likely stayed at the Rock House at Cranes Lookout in Watertown - his "true" shelter was below this location near to Gravestone Road. It is referred to in Susan Campbell's Connecticut Curiosities, on very old maps, and the second edition of the Connecticut Walk Book.

Tory's Den was also a stopping place of the Leather Man. This is the location where his water well was poisoned.
