Colin McEnroe Show: David Edelstein
America's Greatest Living Film Critic breaks down the summer movie season.
On Saturday I finally made to "Inception." Now, even if you haven't seen the movie, you may know that a lot of it takes place inside the dreams of various characters. And you may know that the movie asks a question we've asked before on this show: How do we know this is reality?
For the characters in "Inception," the question is this - What are the qualities of a dream that would allow us to know that this moment either is or isn't a dream? When I left the theater in the early evening Saturday, the western sky was a peculiar silver-gray and the setting sun was a hazy white dot hovering behind it. To the east of me, Blue Back Square spread out in all its contrived "Truman Show" glory. This was reality?
The cinematic experience itself is a dream -- a dark room and a bright image. When we leave the theater, we awaken, either to the world we know or the one that replaced it.
David Edelstein joined us today to talk about this and more. What's your favorite flick of the summer? Leave your comments below, e-mail colin@wnpr.org or Tweet us @wnprcolin.

[Liam Neeson] is great in Taken, it's like watching Abe Lincoln break people's necks.

Does 60 Minutes change the ticking clock?
Prince has always been underappreciated, but this song perfectly sets the stage for your show. Bring him back!

Well yeah... as a tuba player I enjoyed today's intro in a big, bombastic way.
Another tune you may enjoy: "When Yuba Plays the Rumba on his Tuba Down in Cuba".
