I was in the courtroom today when the verdict came down. As the crowd exited, a tearful Susan McMullen, chief of staff for Eddie Perez, said to me and Helen Ubinas, "This is a tragedy, a tragedy for the city of Hartford."

She's right. We may not all share her deep sympathy for the mayor and his family but -- especially as Maria Perez clung to her husband sobbing and shouting words of grief before sinking to the floor -- it was hard to see this as anything but an American tragedy about a young man who came to the mainland from Puerto Rico, drifted to the wrong side of the law, drifted back, rose to power and then in a long, long chain of very bad moves, undid everything he had worked for, pulling people down in his wake.

I stopped being a fan a long time ago, but I found myself wondering about basic questions, like Maria's health insurance, as we trudged out of the court house.

Listen above for reactions to the Perez verdict from bystanders at Hartford Superior Court and Bushnell Park in Hartford.
