Colin McEnroe Show: The Fall - And Potential Rise - Of High School Newspapers
I dedicate today's show to the memory of Warren Baird my high school journalism teacher and faculty advisor to the Kingswood News of which I was editor in chief.
Mr. Baird taught the only journalism class I ever took. And he didn't have an especially expansive or gonzo attitude toward journalism even though this was around 1970.
But in one semester, he taught me an awful lot of what I know about doing things right. And then, when I took over the newspaper, he struck a nearly perfect balance of getting me to exercise some awareness of the complicated constituencies reading and reacting to a newspaper at a private school and letting me blow all that off once in a while and cause trouble.
I did actually lie to him once and sgree to take something out which I then published. And he didn't strangle me.
High school newspapers. One of them shaped me. How have they impacted you? Join the conversation. Call 860-275-7266, e-mail colin@wnpr.org or Tweet us @wnprcolin.

My high school paper helped me a lot. It helped me find an online masters degree organizational leadership program. Sometimes when you finish high school, you know so little about your choices and which one is the best. My high school paper helped me and that is so important for me. The people working there did their best.
