Colin McEnroe Show: Former Mayor Perez Sentenced; McMahon Closes Q-Poll Gap

Former Hartford Mayor Eddie Perez was sentenced Tuesday to three years in prison (an eight-year sentence suspended after three). The mayor would face an additional  three years of probation under the sentence. He is seeking an appeal of the verdict, which found him guilty of five corruption charges. In the audio for this show, WNPR's Jeff Cohen reports on the sentence and describes the scene at the courthouse.

Meanwhile,. it's beginning to look like 2008 was an even bigger political aberration than we thought. For one brief moment, American voters got very excited about one person promising transformation, and they engaged in unprecedented numbers and with unusual passion.

Turnout naturally falls back down into the 30 percent range in an off-year election, but one senses an even deeper sense of disappointment and dissatisfaction among voters, as if they used up all their hope for change on one giant splurge.

The latest poll numbers should scare Connecticut Democrats, especially because tide and turnout seem to be flowing toward Republicans, but also because Democratic support may be unusually soft, leading to poor turnout for all of their candidates, even some who would win easily in a normal year.

We'll talk about that and the sentencing of Eddie Perez on today's political roundtable. You can join the conversation below, e-mail colin@wnpr.org or Tweet us @wnprcolin.

But what has Linda McMahon done except for running a business? And have I missed the debates she participated in? And she's a good friend and cares about people....so am I.

Just my 2 cents, not surprised on Wrestling vs Vietnam, as the people can easily see the Wrestling "improprieties" or weirdness just as part of the product of the particular business, not McMahons personal responsibility. While what Blementhal apparently did, which you did a good job covering when it came out, is actively lied to burnish his political reputation. I think the electorate has little appetite for the latter than they do for making a buck in the marketplace.

I think Richard Blumenthal should dress up in a padded wrestling costume (Halloween is coming) for a commercial and say he's as tuff an Linda McMahon.

I think one important problem democratic candidates are facing is they don't have a unifying message. Maybe Democrats should play off that since Replicans are the party of no, Democrats should point out that they're the party of YES: YES we did and YES we can do more? Then get to the details of what's in it for the voters.

You know what i don't get? Polls!
Yesterday, I was elated as I walked up the driving after retreiving the JI, and I read RIGHT ON THE FRONT PAGE that, according to some stupid poll, Blumenthal was EXPANDING his lead over McMahon. Today the Q poll says just the opposite?

On the last Friday in January, 2003, a town car pulled up and parked across from the fire station that faces El Mercado on Park Street at Babcock. Mayor Perez and another official emerged. I called over and pointed out to the Mayor that they had just parked in a bus stop zone. His response was that no bus was in sight.
This reflects someone who is committed to perks, not someone who wishes to serve.
