Colin McEnroe Show: Elizabeth Park

A park is so much more than just a piece of land, and there are certain city parks that invite a rich mix of people bursting with creative, amorous and physical energies. We think Elizabeth Park in Hartford and West Hartford is such a place.

Maybe the most important thing about it is that way, on a beautiful Saturday, you'll see about 19 kinds of people mixing effortlessly. We just don't have that in many other places around Connecticut.

We're supposed to be a melting pot, but people cluster together homogeneously. Elizabeth Park draws in pretty much everybody, and once they arrive, they get along pretty well. I think that's another part of today's premise. In certain parks, there's a vibration. Maybe it comes from deep deep in the ground, from something that was there before they even made a park in that spot. You'll hear today. Elizabeth Park speaks to people.

it's great to hear you doing a piece on Elizabeth Park. I went there on the first day of summer 2010 when the rose garden was in full bloom. There were so many people having a great time. I was in the rose garden for 4 hours making HDR (High Dynamic Range) photos and thought I would share some of them with you. I'm not trying to plug my site or anything but you should check these images out. http://www.brianwinshell.com/?p=1331

About 17 years ago I bought a house in North Granby that was full of the previous owners possessions. They had been there since the early twenties and left everything including the furniture. Among the artifacts we discovered was an old film reel in a metal canister marked "Elizabeth Park". I gave this to a friend who is a film buff and worked for the Knox Foundation who were then located in the park. Imagine my surprise when he reported back that "Elizabeth Park" was an "adult" film actress from the fifties!
