Hypnosis is one of those terms we all throw around without necessarily knowing what the word really means. And, as we prepare to do this show, I'm far less sure I know what it means.

Today you'll meet two people whose jobs are very different, but whose techniques may turn out to be startlingly similar.

Marc Salem is an entertainer, a mentalist. In his act he reads the serial numbers on dollar bills while blindfolded and changes the time on a person's wristwatch without touching it. But my sense is that what Salem really does is read our shifting mental states better than we do. Maybe we're not as conscious as we think we are.

Billl Priftis is a certified hypnotist working in the integrative medicine department of St. Francis Hospital in Hartford. It's a second career after a life in advertising.

In a way, all of this is about our varying levels of attention.
