Colin McEnroe Show: Phobias
Heaven knows there's enough in this world to be afraid of. We were reminded again today, in Manchester, of how quickly life can turn frightening.
So it's both odd and not odd that we add to our list of fears. A phobia is a fear with no basis in reality or common sense. It almost seems as if our brains accidentally wire the regular fear apparatus to something not necessarily harmful. So that all the legitimate terror you would experience from the onset of a heart attack or the sight of black mamba slithering toward you gets projected instead onto Tic Tacs or rabbits.
Which is kind of funny. Unless you're the one having the phobia.
It turns out that at least 10 percent of adult Americans have something that could legitimately be called a phobia.
We'll talk today about where those come from and what kind of treatments exist. Maybe you'll share your story too. Talking helps.
You can join the conversation. What do you fear? Leave your comments below, e-mail colin@wnpr.org or Tweet us @wnprcolin.

These things that I thought were my wings - that were holding me up - were just holding me back.
