If you want to know how long a road we took to get to this day, consider that in the 2007 election, the charges against Eddie Perez were already a big issue.
For me the story goes back as far as Sept, 11 2001. Forgotten in the chaos of that day is this: there were primaries in Connecticut and the state - wisely I think - decided to keep the polls open. What would be a better symbol of an indomitable democracy than voting?
One of the primaries was in Hartford. Around 10 p.m., exhausted from covering the attacks, I suddenly remembered our democracy and drove to Park Street, to the headquarters of that day's winner, Eddie Perez. It seemed like a triumph at the time. A history making Puerto Rican mayor on that horrible day.
It seemed to disprove, vaguely, the ideas about us that led to the attack.
Somehow, now, that doesn't seem so clear.
