Colin McEnroe Show: Secret Lives Of Truckers

No matter what you think of trucks and truckers, trying going a day without anything that made at least part of its way to you on a truck. It would be a quiet day, I think.

Truckers are out there trying to share the road with us, and today, we want you to hear their voices.

Our stereotypes are probably a little off. A fair number of truckers are women. They're as likely to be interested in Sirius satellite radio as CBs, and some of them even use audiobooks to keep from going nuts.

The technology of the business is changing, and some trucks now come equipped with monitors and governors that allow the parent company to set maximum speeds.

Some of our guests today compete in state and national championships and these turn out to include written exams safety tests and spot-the-defect challenges.  Trucks are going away. If you think they are you've got a blind spot. And that, as we will learn today, is something you want to avoid.

Following distance

I can understand both points of view from drivers and from the four-wheelers when it comes to sharing the road.

I have a though that often gets over looked. Following distance people!
We have all been aware of this simple rule of the road since our first days of Drivers Education and it seems no one bothers to adhere to this life saving rule.

When I was on the road I did my best to maintain a ten car length seperation between me and the car in front of me and I try to keep a 7 car lengths between vehicles. When this is done it also reduces speed and this help to avoid accidents as well.

It is a safe pratice that student's and pro's alike should pratice, myself included.

Drivers and four wheelers are welcome to visit my new blog at www.truckersposts.blogspot.com It is a brand new blog and I would welcome your thoughts and opions and I encourage readers to participate.

I love the show guys! I have many friends on the road who are followers. Kuddo's and keep up the good, informative programing.

Do many of these women truckers have children? How do these M----- truckers handle this role?

Sorry about the pun but I'm curious about the basic question.

E-mail from Jack

While on vacation in Upstate NY last week, I saw a large tractor trailer with 2 conspicuous arrows painted on the rear door for the benefit of following drivers. One of the arrows pointed to the left and was labeled "passing side." The other arrow pointed to the right and was labeled "suicide." I'm sure your guests today can relate to that!
