Colin McEnroe Show: Urban Mining

The idea for today's show started with a story in the New Haven Independent about 7,000 square feet of maple flooring in the gym of a school slated for demolition.

Joe DeRisi, one of our guests today, realized that the floor had fallen through the cracks, which -- when you think about it -- is kind of impossible, but we know what he meant.

DeRisi was the first of several people we met who were doing a new kind of work in a field called deconstruction -- an alternative to demolition in which every possible building material is preserved for some kind of reuse, even if it's just in a wood stove.

Most of our show today will be taken up with stories of deconstruction, but we were also surprised by the morning news that Susan Bysiewicz has entered the 2012 race for Joe Lieberman's U.S. Senate race. Toward the end of our show, we talk to Mark Pazniokas from the Connecticut Mirror about that.

I recently saw some pieces on

I recently saw some pieces on shows like CNN and the journal with Joan Lunden on PBS that were talking about issues and solutions for industrial recycling. This is an interesting twist that could really become a game changer in the future. Whoever gets in at the beginning of the urban mining will possibly be a part of a new gold rush of sorts. I hope we start implementing such programs early on to reduce our dependence.

Building Deconstruction

I enjoyed the show on building deconstruction. I wanted to let people know that the 'denailing gun' or the Nail Kicker is sold by Reconnx and their site is http://nailkicker.com/joomla/.
