Colin McEnroe Show: What Do Festivals Do?

Last year, Patrick Skahill and I arrived on one of the first days of the International Festival of Arts and Ideas and attended, if that's the right word, "Susurrus," a play that unfolded in our heads as we walked though New Haven's Edgerton Park listening to the drama unfold on headphones.

It was odd. You remembered the sensation more than the plot. You remembered the serendipity, like the huge white dog who crossed my path at an especially uncomfortable moment of the play.

I flew out to California and came back in time to be a guest artist on the last night of the Festival in a touring production called "Chatauqua," which ended in a moment of full front male nudity. Not mine. But that's what we like in a festival. Surprise. Flow. A sense of immersion. We're back this year with singers, actors, composer and troublemakers.
