Colin McEnroe Show: What Happened To The Great American Jingle?

An adjunct pleasure to the TV show "Mad Men" is watching the actual commercials produced during that era. They're all on YouTube, and all of us who did homework for this show found ourselves getting addicted to watching first one ... then another and then another.

We started with old beer commercials, but one's eye is drawn into the right hand column where all kind of other interesting black and white commercials await. I was reminded that, in my boyhood, there was almost nothing sexier than Edie Adams singing her way through a series of Muriel cigar ads, always climaxing, as it were, with Edie's heavy lidded look at the camera as she purred "Why don't you pick one up and smoke it some time."

Stan Getz played the sax with her on one of them. For that matter, I'm pretty sure Gerry Mulligan played sax on a Narragansett ad. Jingles really are the soundtrack of your life.

You can join the conversation. What are some of your favorite jingles? Leave your comments below, e-mail colin@wnpr.org or Tweet us @wnprcolin.

I was in jail in the early 1970's for an antiwar demonstration. We were "serving" 15 days and were "allowed" to watch TV after dinner. The Miller add with the jingle "if you've got the time..." was on often, and every time that came on, all the women would raise our (water) glasses and sing "Well we've got the time, we want the beer, Miller beer..." That is one jingle I will remember in my later years, dimension and all.
