The Colin McEnroe Show Feels An Earthquake!

An earthquake that originated in Virginia this afternoon shook buildings in Connecticut forcing people to evacuate. WNPR’s Nancy Cohen reports the quake measured 5.9 on the Richter scale.

Just before 2:00 PM buildings rocked sending state workers out of the Capitol, the Department of Transportation and other state office buildings. The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection staff went to the state’s Emergency Operations Center, as a precaution.

The epicenter was about 35 miles northwest of Richmond Virginia.  But Alan Dunham from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Taunton, Massachusetts says he got calls from people in Connecticut and north.

“We’ve been receiving calls all the way up into southern New Hampshire from people feeling the ground shake or having pictures and knickknacks on the walls shaking.”

There have been no reports of injuries.

At WNPR’s studios in Hartford Colin McEnroe ended his live show abruptly so that he and his staff could evacuate.

For WNPR, I’m Nancy Cohen.
