Fort Trumbull Development Deal Near

New London is on the verge of announcing a deal to build luxury condos at Fort Trumbull, the parcel of land at the center of the famous eminent domain case. The news follows Electric Boat’s decision to move into the nearby Pfizer building. WNPR’s Harriet Jones reports.

Much of the land at Fort Trumbull has remained vacant since the celebrated Supreme Court battle over the rights of the former residents, removed by eminent domain. But the city is about to sign a deal with a developer to build 80 housing units on the land. New London Mayor Rob Pero says it will complement the new activity at the next door corporate building that Electric Boat is buying from Pfizer.

“The fact that that that will be attractive to someone to move in over there, or other people knowing that EB’s going to be here, there’s going to be a building here, there’s going to be activity here – we’ve talked about doing something with the marina down here, so I think that all this will have that ripple effect.”

New London businesses are hoping that more EB employees can be lured to come live in the city – less than 10% of Pfizer’s approximately 2,000 New London employees were New London residents. The city expects to make a formal announcement about the housing development within three weeks.
