Gubernatorial Candidates Square Off At Business Conference
The two gubernatorial candidates vowed to right Connecticut’s economy while cutting state spending, as they both appeared before a business audience in Stamford. WNPR’s Harriet Jones reports.
As the campaign begins in earnest, Republican Tom Foley and Democrat Dan Malloy traded accusations and occasional barbs as they spoke to an economic summit organized by the Connecticut Business and Industry Association. Foley called the state “radioactive” to business, saying he’d tame the state budget, take on the unions and boost the state’s public schools. He also took the legislature to task for its lack of transparency.
Malloy meanwhile defended his record as Mayor of Stamford before his home crowd, and said the state must not let the fiscal crisis distract it from investing in much needed infrastructure improvements.
Both men pledged cuts in state government, Malloy saying he would cut by a third the number of departments and agencies.
