West Hartford Reservoir Could Close to Public

The West Hartford Reservoir is a popular destination for cyclists, runners, and hikers.  But recreational use could end. The Metropolitan District Commission is holding a public hearing Tuesday at 5:30 pm to review its policy after a jury verdict in May awarded $2 million to a Rocky Hill woman who broke her neck after crashing her mountain bike into a steel gate on MDC property in 2002. She was riding the wrong way on the trail when the accident happened. The MDC is stressing that it will not take any formal action at the meeting and has not yet made changes to its recreational policy.

WNPR's Lucy Nalpathanchil spoke to West Hartford Mayor Scott Slifka about tonight's hearing and his proposed resolution to keep the site open to the public.
WNPR asked to speak to the MDC but our requests were declined.

The MDC public hearing on its recreational policy begins at 5:30 at the auditorium in West Hartford's Town hall.
