Malloy Defends Ads Against Lamont
With one week to go before the state primary, democratic candidate for governor, Dan Malloy, is defending his campaign ads against opponent Ned Lamont.
Speaking on WNPR's Where We Live, Malloy says his ads are not negative. Specifically, he says it's fair to question a confidentiality settlement reached between Lamont and a former black employee who was suing Lamont for racial discrimination.
"No one says he's a racist. What they've said is he should answer the questions. That's the reality. Confidentiality agreements aren't that common, they don't really come about that often. This lawsuit was settled just weeks before trial. Someone asked for a confidentiality agreeement to keep the details private, I understand that but now you're running for office, answer it."
One issue that sets the men apart is taxes. Lamont continues to say the state hasn't earned the right to talk about taxes before it cuts the size of government. However, Malloy says he's open to discussing the possibility of raising taxes to help close the state's growing multi-billion dollar deficit.
"I think if you cut $3.5 billion dollars out of this budget in one year, you would devastate social services, you wold devastate the government, it would not be operational. Now, on a long term goal should we downsize government? I've already said I believe it's too top heavy and too top down. We need to start telling th truth to the people of Connecticut. We need to be transparent, there are big decisions to make. We are going to cut government but we are also going to have to look at the revenue side, I'm going to be right upfront."
Malloy is the party's endorsed candidate but he's trailing Lamont by nine points in the latest Quinnipiac poll.
Malloy and Lamont will debate Tuesday which can be heard on WNPR at 3 and 8 pm.
