Malloy Says He's Won

Democrat Dan Malloy says he is the state's governor elect, but not everyone agrees.  WNPR's Jeff Cohen reports.

The secretary of the state says her results are unofficial.  Republican Tom Foley says her results are wrong.  But former Stamford Mayor Malloy says he's the governor-elect.

"I think what they should make of it is Dan Malloy and Nancy Wyman have been elected governor and lieutenant governor of the state of Connecticut.  We're going to conduct the business, we're going to get ready for this administration that takes office on January 5th."

Regardless of the fact that the state had yet to certify his victory, Malloy moved forward.  He named Timothy Bannon his chief of staff and the leader of his transition team.   Bannon is the executive director of the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority.

"We're transitioning.  Period.  I've got to move forward. The people of Connecticut I believe hired  me last night to do just that."

Even though Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz says Malloy's winning margin is just over 3,000 votes, Malloy says it's more like 11,000. And he says it's likely to grow.  In a back-and-forth with WTNH reporter Mark Davis, Malloy said there won't be a recount.

Malloy: It won't go there.

Davis: Well, how can you be so confident?

Malloy: Because we've done our homework.

And although this has been a political season in which seemingly every candidate for statewide office has wound up in court, Malloy avoided answering questions about whatever legal team he has, or hasn't, assembled to deal with potential Republican challenges.
