Montville Fire Destroys Businesses In Plaza

A fire overnight has destroyed several businesses at a Montville shopping plaza. It’s believed no one was injured in the fire. WNPR’s Harriet Jones reports.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at the Oakdale Plaza on Chapel Hill Road shortly after 1am Tuesday morning, when a passer-by noticed smoke and flames. It’s thought the fire broke out in a new café in the plaza that had not yet opened. By the time it was contained it had spread to several other adjacent businesses—as many as eight of the nine stores in the plaza are thought to have been damaged, including a pizza place and a Chinese restaurant.

Firefighters said they were hampered by a lack of fire hydrants near the plaza, and had to pump water from a lake to tackle the flames. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

For WNPR, I'm Harriet Jones.
