The Nose: Looking Back At 2011, Looking Forward To 2012

The job we do here tends to breed a mild case of optimism, because we spend a lot of time talking about new ideas. If we spent a lot of time talking about the status quo, we'd be more pessimistic because so many basic institutions -- political, financial, medical and cultural -- all seem broken.

So today on the Nose, I'm going to ask our panelists -- and anybody sitting out  there who feels like making a phone call -- how they feels as the das of 2011 tick down. What gave you hope? What worried you? For me, the most profoundly hopeful sign is the so-called DIY revolution. It seems more ad more likely that we'll have to take many matters of our lives into our own hands, and the good news is that we seem to have the tools to publish our own books, monitor our own health, launch our own political movements ad create our own workplaces.

EMAIL FROM AMY:

Hi Colin,

I was inspired by Matt Taibbi's journalism this year.

EMAIL FROM RYAN:

One of my favorite columns of the year was your article on the death penalty.

Throughout 2011, I've enjoyed your radio show. I listen whenever I can. Often I find myself enjoying the shows on topics that on their face are not of much interest to me. That's a testament to quality of your show and staff.

Keep up the great work. I wish you and your staff a happy New Year.
