The Nose: Oscar Roundup 2010 - What Were Your Favorites?
The movie that had the biggest impact on the Academy Awards over the last ten years is one that did not win best picture ... or even get nominated - it was "The Dark Knight," Christopher Nolan's 2008 Batman movie that was shunned in 2009.
It was smart. It was critically acclaimed. It contained -- just barely contained -- an absolutely stunning performance by Heath Ledger. Audiences loved it. It earned tons of money for lots of people. And yet somehow it wasn't nominated, because it didn't fit a certain kind of mold. For more about what that mold is, see "The King's Speech" a really good looking historical drama with intimidating British actors and a story about triumphing over a handicap. Game, set, match.
Back to "The Dark Knight." The Academy sensed that something had gone wrong. So now we have ten best picture nominees. How about just figuring it out right?

It seems to me that there are a few ways to secure a nomination and possible win in The Oscars. Americans love to see a beautiful woman make herself ugly (remember Charleze Theron in that coal mining movie?). We also tend to think that British accents in boring movies are award worthy even though nobody is really dying to see pasty faced men overcoming adversities and social class to exceed excellence. Of course we are all suckers for an underdog. I think next year we should cast Julia Roberts as Susan Boyle in the story of one woman and a dream. We could really ugly Julia up, give her a bad wig and encourage her to put on some weight. Maybe Simon Cowell could have a cameo. Americans like Simon Cowell.
