The Nose: We All Scream For Ice Cream

The current vogue for artisanal small batch ice cream is a nostalgia for something most of us never had.

Especially baby boomers who grew up in a world where ice cream was sterilized and shaped into blocks or packed into trucks and sold on a stick. Ice cream was not soft and creamy and personal. It was -- like everything else in the 50s and 60s -- a highly processed product that was meant to seem inert rather than alive.

In the mid-Sixties, Baskin-Robbins started to move slowly, slowly in the other direction. Even the chain's logo used old-timey fonts and graphics to suggest a soda fountain in 1913 -- the kind of soda fountain that had been extinguished by ice cream chains.
What we had really lost was the sense of ice cream as an idiosyncratic, personal and indeed living thing. And now we want it back.

Ice Cream

Great show but one beef. Colin mentioned Tulmeadow Farm in Simsbury as a producer of this type of ice cream. I too was under that impression until yesterday when I looked at the ingredients of a quart of Mint Oreo. I get that you can't make Oreos all that simply, but the ice cream mixture itself was laden with chemicals and, unless they're growing tetra sodium pyrophosphate in West Simsbury, clearly from somewhere else. Like possibly Bayonne, New Jersey.

Petals & Paws in Canton makes their own ice cream and it's awesome. My favorite is the Vanilla Cherry with Chocolate Chunks (made with real cherries).

I can sing the entire Mr. Softee Song! We waited for the Mr Softee truck back in the sixties on the east side of Bridgeport. I remember that my neighbor used to ask us to buy their dog Champ a soft vanilla ice cream at least once a week. (Champ was a very fat dog) Champ spent most his time at our house sleeping on the living room floor next to my father. So we'd take the cone in and watch him lap it up. It was a highlight of our rather mundane days. Champ heard the icecream truck WAY before we did!

Having shared this happy memory,, I have to share a very sad reality of the day. Just prior to your show, I ate a rather tasteless (sp? ugh) Weight Watcher's ice cream sandwich. It's just too sad.

Great show! Here are my seminal ice cream memories

1) The small, independent ice cream shop in Mattapoisett, MA named Gulf Hill Farms with the billboard across the road featuring two, very large, three dimensional cows. We think that they were made of rubber or some such material because they were there for years and years. Amazing piece of art work which was eventually destroyed by an out of control tractor trailer truck on Route 6…

2) Going to Arethusa Farm in Litchfield and paying for fresh ice cream on the honor system… Take the ice cream (or milk or cream or whatever) and leave the money in the box.

3) The story of my fiercely temperance great grandmother sending my mother (aged 5 or 6) to the Gulf Hill Farms to buy “Frozen Pudding” also commonly known as Rum Raisin at a time when the raisins were really soaked in rum… hmmmmmm.

I can tell as a registered dietitian that ice cream is a real obsession with SO many people! Ask them to give up steak or desserts they say ok, but ask them to cut back on ice cream and you might as well ask them to walk down mainstreet naked! Are you mad lady? Make mine chocolate with fudge sauce please! APM
