Segarra On Shootings
Hartford police say a woman shot to death outside a South End bar was the second innocent bystander killed by gunfire in a week. WNPR's Jeff Cohen reports.
Police identified the woman Friday as 27-year-old Jeanna Flores of Wethersfield. She and two men were shot outside the Franklin Bar and Grille early Thursday morning. The men survived. No arrests have been made.
Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra says he is directing his staff to take whatever action is necessary to close the Franklin Bar and Grille. He also had strong words for people involved in violent crime in the city.
"I am not going to let my 20, 22, sometimes 24 hours worth of work to try to turn things around in this city to be derailed by a bunch of thugs that have nothing and contribute absolutely nothing to our city."
Another woman, 25-year-old Altanese Walker of East Hartford, was killed by a stray bullet last week outside a North End convenience store. Police are still looking for suspects.
Segarra says he has a personal interest in curtailing gun violence.
"I lost my father, when I was basically an infant -- who is a mistaken, unfortunate, unintended victim of gun violence. So you couldn't have a mayor that has both felt the consequences of violence and is more determined to do this."
Hartford's murder rate is down 29 percent over last year. But both the number of shooting incidents and shooting victims are up.
