On The Trail Of Facts, Artifacts In Peru
Dispute between Yale, Peru over Machu Picchu continues
This month, WNPR reporter Diane Orson and producer Catie Talarski are in Peru, interviewing subjects for a series of reports on the dispute between Yale University and Peru over ancient artifacts, now held by the university.
Diane's been on this beat for several years, doing stories for WNPR and NPR. Next year is the 100th anniversary of the expedition, led by Yale history professor Hiram Bingham, that discovered the lost city of Machu Picchu. The artifacts he returned to New Haven have been the subject of controversy ever since.
Catie is taking photographs and chronicling their trip for Where We Live's blog.
Late last week, Yale Daily News reported that a group of Yale alumni in Peru have written a letter to the University President asking that Yale return the artifacts. You can read more here.
Aside from coverage of the artifacts dispute, Diane and Catie have reported on Peru's reaction to the Nobel Prize win for writer Mario Vargas Llosa, will be profiling artist Brus Rubio, and will be exploring connections between Connecticut's large Peruvian community and their homeland (for more, see Catie's audio slideshow about a Peruvian procession in Hartford).
Listen to Where We Live for updates from Peru in the coming days.
