Where We Live: Back To School With Susan Herbst

New UConn President Susan Herbst has taken on the job with big plans for the state’s flagship university.

When we spoke with Herbst months ago, just before her appointment had become official, we talked at length about athletics at the school - a point of statewide pride, but also national controversy over graduation rates and compliance issues in the men’s Basketball program.

Now, athletic director Jeff Hathaway is out - we’ll talk about that change, new plans for the UConn Health Center, and budget tightening that’s happening across the board in state government.

We’ll also hear about how UConn’s preparing for Hurricane Irene - on the weekend when students move in.

What questions do you have for UConn President Susan Herbst?

schools

I guess that preparing to be a school leader in an area where you have to deal with hurricane conditions, well, it can be pretty challenging. I have to say that I'm proud of my masters of public administration online diploma and I would love to be offered such a job, but the stress... Don't know if I could cope with that.

back to school

I guess that being the manager of the school and having to prepare for the Hurricane Irene is quite a tough job, but someone has to do it, right? It's harder than studying for a masters degree nursing. Good luck Susan and the best of wishes from Oxford, UK!!

After getting laid off from a museum design management position I was able to get a job last summer very much because I had a Philosophy major (and could both teach that and supervise art teachers in training). My MBA didn't impress anyone in the non-profit world.
