Where We Live: Connecticut's Veterans Aid

Despite many new appointments in his administration, Malloy has held onto Linda Schwartz as Connecticut’s Veterans Affairs Commissioner, a job she’s held for more than seven years.

Schwartz is a Vietnam Veteran herself – she’s led a charge to help Connecticut veterans get the care they need, and the benefits they’re entitled to.  She was also recently installed as the president of the National Association of State Directors of Veterans’ Affairs.  She is the first woman to hold this position and the first person from Connecticut to ever lead the nation’s veterans’ affairs directors

Later, the Veteran’s Administration’s medical center in West Haven is home to the Eastern Blind Rehabilitation Service, one of only 10 advanced-care vision centers for veterans in the country and one of the agency’s “best kept secrets”.

Services available to all Connecticut residents who are blind

Thank you for the informative news feature on services available to veterans, that included information on services available to veterans who are legally blind. During the interview, a question arose regarding the availability of services for people who lose vision, but who are not veterans. I wanted to be sure that listeners are aware that Connecticut's state agency for the Blind (BESB) offers independent living, vocational rehabilitation and educational services to Connecticut residents of all ages who are legally blind (including veterans). There is no cost for these services, that can be provided directly in the homes, places of employment and educational settings of the client. To learn more about BESB's services, listeners can visit the agency website at www.ct.gov/besb, or call the agency at (800)842-4510 or (860)602-4000. Thank you for sharing this information with your listeners. Sincerely, Brian Sigman, BESB Executive Director
