Where We Live: Education Commission on Achievement Gap

A group of business leaders and others, hand-picked by Governor Jodi Rell, unveiled a set of recommendations to close the state’s worst in the nation achievement gap.

The plan has been a longtime in the making – since March, they’ve traveled to Massachusetts, New York and Delaware – states that have made strides in closing the gap between rich and poor students.

They’ve also held public hearings to get the input of local parents, teachers, students and administrators.  And their recommendations could prove to be controversial.  The six categories:

Accountability, high expaectations, leadership, excellent teaching, investing intelligently and a focus on turnaround schools.

These could cost the state money – and could be hard to implement.  But the panel says they’re vital for our economic future.

We hear specifics and give listeners a chance to ask questions.
