Where We Live: The Education Takeover

The city of Bridgeport is the latest struggling school district to be taken over by the state.

The Board of Education in the city has essentially voted to dissolve itself - to be replaced by an oversight board hand-picked by the State Department of Education.

As this process is being played out, city officials got the latest piece of bad news about student performance - the Connecticut Academic Performance Test results show that high school sophomores in Bridgeport have the lowest scores in the state - only 1 in 10 actually meet the goals in math, reading and science.

Today we’ll talk to Mayor Bill Finch and community members about what the state takeover will mean moving forward for the students and the city.

In the smaller town of Windham, the state takeover of the district has taken on a very different look.

education

What is your opinion on masters in special education online? Don't you think that people who have such a qualification could change and improve the education system? Maybe we should give them a chance. Young and creative minds could change the world.

school

This is such a pity. I know lots of people who got a masters degree organizational leadership and who are from Bridgeport. I have no idea how the situation turned out to the worse. What happened? How is this possible?
