Where We Live: Green Building

Green homes, green cars, green clothing – are “green products and technologies” really helping to solve the climate change problem?

The UN Conference on Climate Change happening now in Cancun is the latest effort to rally the global environmental community.  One of the big conversations is about "green" design - in our homes, offices and cars.

For years, researchers have been trying to assess what qualifies something as green, and they’ve put in place many ways to measure environmental impact.

But some have found shortcomings in the existing codes and certifications. Even with the LEED stamp of approval, we still don’t have a full understanding of these supposedly green products’ environmental impact over their entire life cycle.

We’ll talk to a Yale professor who is calling for an overhaul of “green building” evaluations and we’ll hear from the recent recipient of a 2 million dollar grant to do just that – generate new information to better measure the environmental impact of, say, your new solar panels.

And we'll look under the hood at the newest green car technology as the Chevy Volt rolls out in Connecticut this month.
