Where We Live: International Elections
What kind of democracy are global citizens hoping for?
A recent Gallup poll says Middle East residents overwhelmingly consider democracy to be the best form of government.
Coming with this is a widespread desire for greater political freedoms. And this democratic desire spreads far across the world – but what kind of democracy are global citizens hoping for? And what are the challenges of making this happen?
The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) is a non-governmental organization providing support to electoral democracy. Their goals include helping citizens participate in democracies, increasing politicians' accountability to the electorate, and strengthening government institutions.
The organization is holding its meetings in Hartford, in conjunction with a tribute to its chairman Peter Kelly.
Today, where we live, a conversation with four “Chiefs of Party” from IFES – about spreading democracy globally, about the participation of women in democratic states, and how the media informs the electorate in both established and emerging democracies.
