Where We Live: #Occupying Spreads to Connecticut
Activists are not just occupying Wall Street - they’re occupying cities all over the country. We’ll talk to our #Occupy correspondents in Hartford and New York City. The New Haven Independent’s Melissa Bailey has been spending time with protesters on Wall Street - and the Hartford Courant’s Susan Campbell has been following what’s happening with #OccupyHartford. Also, one local blogger and businessman says "Buttons and Bumper Stickers Will Save Our Country!"

Occupy New Haven details and plans
John,
Good afternoon. I noticed you mentioned Occupy New Haven on your show today. I found out about the mention too late to call in and speak about it, but I just want to give you some more info about New Haven's Occupation:
We are holding a meeting on the Upper Green on Saturday, 10/8, this coming Saturday, at 6 p.m. This is going to be our second planning meeting. I can't be there, unfortunately, because I planned something with friends a while back, but I believe we will get meeting minutes of some kind or another. I kind of wish members of the press would attend, because then we could capture some of how the New Haven General Assembly will work and show the general public how our democratic process runs. We are mostly new to the process, so it may not go as smoothly and as organized as it does at Wall Street, but we are trying. It was pretty orderly on Tuesday night, so I believe it will work out. It will probably be a pretty long meeting, as consensus does take time to reach, so it's my hope that organizers will keep things running smoothly and that we can actually plan out all the logistics and get this thing going before people just lose interest and want to go home for the night.
We have someone who contacted the City of New Haven and the NHPD and they said that we will be allowed to occupy the Upper Green (the side of the Green with the churches, closest to Yale) and not the Lower Green, only because they say there are water pipes buried underneath the Lower Green (presumably for the water fountain) that could be ruptured by tent stakes and the like. We came to a consensus at our first meeting on October 4th that we will comply with the city's orders because we want to stay on good terms with them. This will make it quite a bit easier for our Occupation to grow and thrive than, for instance, what is happening in places like Chicago and San Francisco, where the police have asked them to move or disperse. I heard reports from Occupy Chicago that they had been dispersed a few days ago, but they are now back on their feet again and growing rapidly.
At our first meeting, we expected to have about 40 to 50 people, and at least 100 showed up, filling our room at the Cask Republic and forcing us to go out to Pitkin Plaza (that was suggested by someone and we reached consensus on it). We have some photos and I thought someone might have had video, but I'm not sure. If you have any questions, you can contact me via the email address I am entering here, or for a faster response, visit our Facebook page, which I'm also entering here, as that is our main organizational tool, for better or worse.
Regards,
Josh Smith
