Where We Live: On The Repeal Of Capital Punishment
Will Connecticut abolish the death penalty?
On the day Illinois is expected to abolish the death penalty, Connecticut lawmakers are grappling with the same question.
Democrats in this state who want to repeal the law allowing executions feel this is their year - with a Governor who says he’ll sign a “prospective” law. But many people from both parties want to keep the punishment as a tool for prosecutors.
At a public hearing this week lawmakers on both sides heard from Dr. William Petit, the sole survivor of a triple homicide that cost his his family. He wants to preserve the death penalty - and polls show that most state residents agree.
Today, where we live, we’ll consider the politics and policy of the death penalty, and whether it works as a deterrent.
We’ll also look at what a Supreme Court ruling this week might mean for future death row inmates, and we’ll check in with a Chicago Tribune columnist about Illinois’ decision to repeal the death penalty.

I don't think the death penalty is easy to discuss about as a depuy hip lawsuit. My question: why should a murderer be kept in prison on tax payers' money? If the death penalty gets out of the way, that means the person will get a life sentence instead. Who pays for that life sentence? The murderer surely doesn't pay a dime. So people end up paying for crimes that others have done. How come?
death penalty
I think we should listen to the 80 plus murder victim family members in our state who call for repeal of the death penalty because Connecticut's death penalty harms victims with its years of appeals and constant media attention. We should redirect the resources to helping these families and proven crime prevention programs.
Don't abolish the death penalty
DO NOT abolish the death penalty. After what happened to the Petit familiy, and what lead up to it, we must execute these cold blooded killer ASAP, and I don't care how they do it. If we don't, it will give other would be killers the green light to break into other people's home, rape the mother and daughters, and kill them outright, and I think these people who want to abolish the death penalty don't give a damn. That's right, they don't care one bit about the victims or their horrors. Hayes and Komisarjevsky WILL eventually be released to kill again should the death penalty be abolished. This is true because there are lawyers with no morals or scruples or consideration for the victims that will get them released so they can make money. That's all they care about. Anyone who opposes the death penalty in Connecticut is simply a cold blooded killers best friend. We must execute these child murders as soon as we can so that they will never be released and never kill again. I just don't trust the legal system in Connecticut otherwise.
Abolish the Death Penalty
First, nobody called my house in order for me to participate in a poll regarding the death penalty. Polls are over-rated.
If and when the Death Penalty is ABOLISHED in CT, it would be replaced with "A Life Sentence Without the Possibility of Parole". We are all aware of the horrors Mrs. Petit and her daughters had to go thru but I do not condone legalizing murder. No one has the right to take another's life...NO ONE. The victim will never be brought back to life and the surviving family/friends/loved ones will always grieve their loss. Legal Death wouldn't change that. I'm pleased to see the State of Illinois made (what I believe) to be the right decision. I truly hope CT follows in the near future.
