Where We Live: Report From Machu Pichu
Who has ownership of Machu Pichu artifacts, Yale or Peru?

WNPR's Diane Orson reports from Peru with further research and interviews about the dispute between Yale University and the Government of Peru over artifacts from Machu Picchu that have been at Yale’s Peabody Museum for nearly a century.
Yale explorer Hiram Bingham is credited with rediscovering the Incan site of Machu Picchu high up the Andes mountains of Peru. He was granted permission by the Peruvian gov’t to excavcate artifacts and bring them to New Haven for research. Peru wants the artifacts returned. Yale says it has the right to keep the objects. And this case in now in court. Diane has been following the story for many years now, and these past couple of weeks she has had the chance to see places, along with producer Catie Talarski that she had only before reported and talked about. A few weeks ago there was a hearing in federal court in Hartford in Yale’s Motion to Dismiss. We'll hear from Eduardo Ferrero, former ambassador to Peru and currently the lawyer appointed by the Government of Peru says about the legal situation. As well as several Yale graduates, and someone from the Inca Museum of the National University of Cusco.
Funding for grant provided by private family foundation in Connecticut.
