Where We Live: UConn After Hogan

UConnPresident Mike Hogan is leaving the university after less than three years on the job.

This comes just after Governor Rell helped push through a $362 million dollar project to overhaul the UConn Health Center in Farmington - something he’s spent his tenure pushing hard for.

He’ll be temporarily replaced by the man who preceded him in the job – Philip Austin.

Hogan’s time at UConn was not without controversy, having spent more than $400 thousand dollars on renovations to the campus building that houses his office – and taking hefty pay increases.

As the university has grown – tuition has gone up, but the number of faculty has stayed nearly the same, leaving some students unable to get into classes – and making others wonder, “what are we paying for?”

Coming up, a conversation about the future of the University of Connecticut, plans for the health center, and what the school needs in a new president

Basketball Scandal

The value of the UCONN basketball program has been diminished by the coach involving himself in rule violation. His immediate dismissal will not rectify the situation but will demonstrate that the unviersity is willing to take action to save the reputation of an otherwise solid institution.

UConn purchased six life-size cardboard cutouts of Pres. Hogan that were placed around campus, at the cost of $3,510. The money came from the school's operating fund, which includes student tuition fees.
The cutouts are one of many signs of just how far the administration and its marketing arm are removed from life. Student are paying higher tuition, buying expensive textbooks and attending crowded classes.

The University of Ct is administration "heavy", and desperately needs to hire faculty!

I love how in these budget minded times, when the state is having such fiscal problems , the head of UConn board of trustees works the cost of the faculty benefits package into the conversation, when redecorating the presidents office has all the funding that needed. I am sure UConn students, and the parents of students who are paying the newest tuition increase, are pleased to know their money is going to help defray the cost of President Hogan's office.

The state has spent $44,000 in lease and utility payments, $23,000 in housekeeper's fees (for a 7 month period) and more than $130,000 in numerous renovations and repairs for Pres. Hogan’s house.

The Uconn board of trustees has a lot to answer for, maybe that’s a good topic for another show.

It is just plain wrong that tuition dollars are going into the General Fund -- they should remain with UConn and tuition should actually go DOWN. Someone should file a class action suit on behalf of the students -- to prevent this from happening. I agree with Jonathan Pelto's observations and thank him for bringing it to your audience's attention.
