Where We Live: UConn Athletics in Transition

We talk with Hartford Courant columnist Jeff Jacobs about the “resignation” of UConn athletic director Jeff Hathaway. He is leaving the post he's had since 2003. Although the athletics program has enjoyed success, Hathaway was criticized for low attendance and fundraising.

The move may indicate new President Susan Herbst's commitment to revamping the school's athletic program. Jacobs praised Herbst's handling of the situation:

"She was able to end the process without mediation, arbitration, without a nasty lawsuit, without public mudslinging."

We talk with Jacobs about what led to this change and what lies ahead for the sports program.

Tutoring athletes

One caller referred to a check that supposedly been seen by a friend of the callers who worked at Colonial Realty. This is hearsay about something that supposedly happened more than 20 years ago and I have no personal knowledge of any of it. He also spoke about a relative who tutored basketball players. I have tutored dozens of athletes at UConn, mostly football players. The pay rate is about average for a student job and I was always paid accurately and on time. I was also impressed by the motivation and work ethic of the student athletes. They are under tremendous pressure to perform both academically and athleticly particullarly those with scholarships at stake. Their schedules are brutal. And to state that they don't know their own initials is completely false.
