Where We Live: The Young And Unemployed

Across the country, millions are still unemployed…and they’re not just older workers who’ve been laid off.

The most recent government report says nearly 20% of young adults don’t have jobs.

Recently on the show we talked about “emerging adulthood” – the phenomenon of young people postponing marriage and parenthood until at least their late twenties, and spending lots of time in self-focused exploration.

Today we’ll follow up that conversation talking about recent college grads that may not have the safety net that allows them to explore during those “emerging years”.   They’re just trying to find a job – and it’s a hard search.

Plus there’s there this – Austan Goolsbee, an economic advisor to President Obama says “graduates’ first jobs have an inordinate impact on their career path and lifetime earnings.”

So, do you take the first thing that’s offered – or wait?

This is a great topic. I have

This is a great topic. I have watched so many of my peers, people at the top of my class not be able to attain jobs. Fields like communications, education, bussiness are lacking new talent. New talent that could/would be a great asset to their companies. I would love a follow-up on this. Maybe you could interview companies that are hiring and ask what they are looking for. This would be great for college/ students and people seeking jobs. Sometimes its not about talent, its about gaining an oppertunity.
