Colin McEnroe Show: The Compulsion To Hoard Our Stuff

My pet theory is that the environmental movement has contributed to the problem of hoarding, but maybe I'm just feeling defensive about my desk. I have a hard time throwing things out if I know they should be recycled.

Here in this building, we don't seem to recycle anything. So every once in a while, I haul a load of plastic bottles home and put them in my household recycling stream. I've done the same thing with newspapers. But while I'm waiting to do that, stuff piles up.

In an odd way,  the digital revolution may have caused some clutter too. There doesn't seem to be the same after-market for used books and CDs. You used to be able to donate them to a book sale, but my sense is that those are drying up. So the books ...just ... sit.

Today on the show, we'll talk about compulsive hoarding .and the more normal kind. Ich bin ein hoarder.

Is there a group for someone who is compulsive about throwing things out , mine and other peoples? And then regretting it? I've gotten into a lot of trouble doing this in order to keep my house "clutter free" I've had to re buy stuff for myself and others!
